Individual work with children and adolescents

One of our specialist areas and interests is child and adolescent mental health.  This ranges from individual work with children/adolescents or working with a child/adolescent and a parent/carer.

Children can struggle with many issues in life including death of a significant adult, sibling or friend, separation or divorce, bullying, anxieties/fears and phobias and trauma.  Children, however, also have the resilience to get back on track quite quickly and therefore it is always best to seek advice and help as soon as you feel your child is not coping in life as well as they might.  This might manifest as low mood, sleep difficulties, social withdrawal, excessively clingy, tearful, tantrums regression in their development or being fearful and avoiding certain situations.  We can offer after school appointments in order to avoid a child or young person missing valuable time off school as well as accommodaing parents working hours.

Sometimes parents need support in helping or supporting their chilldren thorugh diffiuclt times or find that their child is becoming more and more challenging and need to  find ways of being more confident in their parenting skills.

We can offer a range of programmes to suit the family. These range from:

Triple P Parenting Programme

Wendy is accredited to facilitate a new and effective Triple P parenting programme researched by the University of Queensland and Health Promotion Services of the Health Department of Western Australia. This group programme has recently been featured on television under the title 'Driving Mum and Dad Crazy'. There are two group triple P programmes run by futureminds one for children aged 5-12 years and one for adolescents 12-16 years. The course is run over 8 weeks; weeks 1-4 involve parents working as a group with the facilitator using video/DVD, overheads, small group discussion and feedback. In weeks 5-8 one of the facilitators will offer a 20-minute telephone consultation at a time to suit the parents and tailoring the programme to the particular needs of the parent/child practising strategies learned from the course.

When groups are not running Wendy is able to adapt the course to work with individual parents/carers.

Individual parenting programme

Many parents find that they are using strategies but nothing seems to be working. We are able to offer a client led service using a combination of clinical setting, home visits and telephone consultation. We will be able to conduct a full assessment leading to advice and support in the home ‘super nanny’ style.

Parent child game

Futureminds is able to offer the Parent Child Game, which is an effective way of working with parents/carers of children who may have attachment difficulties. Wendy is trained In this approach which Involves the parent/carer wearing an ear piece and following the Instructions of the therapist who may be observing from a different room. The parent/carer then has direct In the moment advice on how to develop a more positive relationship with their child and how to manage difficult/challenging behaviour.

These facilities are availabe in our Ashby Consulting rooms which have been designed to create a comfortable and relaxing environment.

Wendy has competed level 1 of Theraplay training for individuals and groups and uses these thechniques when working with parents and children with attachment issues.
