Abingdon & Whitney Model

 

The Abingdon and Witney Model (AWM) for working with futureminds

This model is recommended for cost effective behaviour support in a general FE College. It has been developed in collaboration with futureminds and had a pilot year of operation. In the next year we are going to call this service Lifestyle Support. The model is fully accountable and allows College staff to complement the specialist work that futureminds provides. The model has several stages of operation:

Stage Characteristics Transition between phases

1.

Identify a group which contains one or more students who are causing concerns about their level of achievement and exhibiting behaviours which are beyond the usual range of staff expectations.

Book a date with futureminds and set up at least two class observation sessions in different settings along with meetings with tutor staff.

futureminds write a report of observations and recommendations for follow-up work with individuals.

2.

One to one sessions with individuals identified from stage one.

futureminds will agree a “programme” with each student. Students may opt out at this stage after one feedback session. Students and futureminds will agree the end point on the basis of progress made.

futureminds will work according to timetabled sessions made by the college; a report to the College link staff (usually from Student Support Services) will be written at the end of each month by futureminds.

3.

Development of support by futureminds into staff “supervisory” support of Teaching staff or the Support Services Staff who will be on hand to help the students in between the visits of futureminds.

Supporting the teching staf is crucial in maintaining change.  This might be through reports, email or face to face discussion. 

4.

Training to teaching and support saff.  futureminds are able to identify areas where training on mental health issues might be appropriate. theses might be areas to do with autaism, learning disability, behaviours, how to help others learn and flourish etc.

Other groups can be introduced into the futureminds work once stage two is reached; this could either be by extra days of visits or by utilising “gaps” in the timetable for day visits to existing student clients.

Areas identified would be discussed with the college and a bespoke half day, whole day or ongoing training package arranged.

At this point a day visit from futureminds could actually include working at any level from Stage One to Stage Three.

The model has worked well and some improvements have been observed in the behaviour of some students. In the next year we will want to develop some impact or success measures with FM.
